Insurance Sucks!
The day I picked my bike up I called my current insurance provider, Erie Insurance to get the bike covered before I left the bike shop. The lady on the phone told me I had to come into my local agent and fill out paperwork in person. That wasn't going to happen since I was about 50 miles away and I had rented a U-Haul to pick up the bike. I asked her why we couldn't do it over fax and she said she would go to jail if she did that. I promptly to "get bent" and disconnected the call.
It seems that in Pa, it is not enough to show you have coverage, you have to prove you have the actual bike covered. So, the lady who processed my paperwork hooked me up with Rider Insurance. The guy on the phone was able to get me set up via fax (without going to jail) but he told me that they would not cover choppers or custom built bikes with comprehensive insurance. So, I paid the guy $60.00 over the phone for a month of liability coverage so I could trailer the bike home. However, since I took out a loan for a portion of the bike, I have to have comprehensive insurance.
So, after calling Allstate and Geico, I found out that getting a custom bike fully covered wasn't going to be easy. A relative of a friend told me to call Fischer Specialty Insurance to see what they could do for me. I talked to the agent and had full coverage by the end of the day. However, I found out that full insurance is not cheap. Actually, I'm $1,200 less in the pocket per year to make sure my bike is covered. Ouch! If anyone knows of a better place for a lower price feel free to send me the info.
